Thermo Fisher Scientific to Showcase Broad Product Portfolio to Support Polymer Science at Chinaplas 2010

Free seminar sessions during the show

SHANGHAI, PR China (19. April, 2010) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, will showcase a broad product portfolio that supports the polymer process from research and development through production and quality control within booth # E1T01 in hall E1 at Chinaplas 2010, to be held April 19-22 in Shanghai, PR China. Prospects can enhance their knowledge at free seminars within the booth, including sessions on polymer workflow solutions and extrusion coating.

Thermo Fisher will present comprehensive material characterization products that feature complete polymer workflow solutions, from micro-compounding and sample specimen preparation to rheological characterization and optical and mechanical testing for polymer research and development, quality control and production. Lab-scale extruders and thermal analyzers are also on exhibit.

Visitors can see innovative web processing solutions for production measurement and control by advanced nuclear, x-ray, infrared and optical sensor technologies, as well as an application-specific portfolio for material savings and improved line utilization. New at the show will be the Thermo Scientific IPlus!, a robust and reliable total basis weight or thickness measurement and control system.

The IPlus! measures basis weight, direct thickness or moisture weight in applications such as cast film extrusion, sheet extrusion, vinyl calendaring and extrusion coating. Its advanced sensor technologies, packaged in an intuitive, easy-to-use system, combines highly specialized measurement and control strategies with proven industry-standard hardware and software. This provides plastic manufacturers with a high-performance measurement and control system that is powerful, yet easy to use and support.

The instrument can be equipped with optional features such as closed loop machine direction control to automatically adjust the line speed or screw-speed and auto die profile control with non-linear mapping to achieve optimal production quality and maintain production target. The complete solution provides users with increased product uniformity, solid quality, raw material savings and line utilization.

The company will also showcase its new rheometer platform, Thermo Scientific HAAKE MARS III, for the first time in China. The modular rheometer platform features the five MARS factors: future-orientation, accuracy, ease of use, modularity and application solutions. With its specific accessory for the polymer industry, users can customize the rheometer to individual needs.

Features of the next-generation rheometer include:

  • Temperature modules for a fast and precise temperature control (e.g. patented Controlled Test Chamber (CTC) for temperature range –150 °C up to 600 °C).
  • Solid clamps for torsional DMA tests for processing optimization and MWD determination.
  • SER tool for extensional rheology, solid tensile testing.
  • Exchangeable measuring geometries (plates and cones) for maximum flexibility in terms of dimensions, materials and surfaces and filling tools
  • Combined methods: RheoScope module for simultaneous measurement of rheological characteristics and observation of structural changes (e.g. melting behaviour and crystallization).
  • UV measuring cells (e.g. for UV assisted thermal curing).
  • Tribology cell for friction tests.

In addition to the Thermo Scientific HAAKE PolyLab QS measuring mixer and extruder system, which is focused on quality control (QC) needs, the company is also exhibiting a complementary workflow solution, which features the micro-compounder Thermo Scientific HAAKE MiniLab coupled with the mini-injection moulder Thermo Scientific HAAKE MiniJet.

The HAAKE MiniLab combines compounding and viscosity tests for small volume samples as little as 5 g or 7 cm³. The instrument is based on proven, conical twin-screw technology with co- and counter-rotating screws and works as a standalone unit with data export or as a fully computer-controlled system. When coupled with the HAAKE MiniJet, various test specimens can be easily produced from the compounded material (powders, pellets or melts) and measured in the HAAKE MARS rheometer afterwards.
